Concrete Storm Shelters

Concrete Storm Shelters from a crew that shows up

When the sirens go off in Middle Tennessee, you want somewhere to go that will not move. Tornado season comes every spring and often again in late fall, and a lot of homes around Spring Hill, Columbia and Murfreesboro have no basement to run to. An interior closet is better than nothing, but it is not a shelter. A poured concrete storm shelter gives your family a solid room of reinforced concrete, close enough to reach in the short window you might get after a warning.

Storm shelters are a specialty for our crew. We build poured in-ground shelters in the yard, above-ground poured shelters and safe rooms in the garage or beside the house, and shelters under the garage slab. If you are buying a prefab shelter, we pour the pad and set the anchor bolts to fit it. We dig, form, set steel, pour the walls and roof slab, and set the door, all with our own crew. Our job photos show wood forms set for a poured concrete shelter, and we bring twenty-plus years in concrete, licensed and insured.

Questions

Concrete Storm Shelters FAQs

Can I put an in-ground shelter in with the rock and clay around here?

Often, but not on every lot. Limestone close to the surface can make a deep dig hard, and clay that holds water after heavy spring rain means an in-ground shelter needs good waterproofing and drainage. If the site is rocky or wet, an above-ground poured shelter or an anchored unit in the garage is usually the better call, and we check before you commit.

How much does a concrete storm shelter cost?

It depends on the type and size, how much digging the site needs, whether we hit rock, and the door and vents you choose. An anchored pad for a prefab unit is a much smaller job than a fully poured in-ground room. We give a free quote after seeing your property.

How long does a shelter take, and do I need a permit?

Most cities and counties want a permit for a storm shelter, and we help line it up. A poured shelter takes longer than a pad because the floor, walls and roof slab are poured and cured in stages, and rain can slow the dig. We lay out the schedule when we quote, and it pays to start well ahead of spring storm season.

In-ground or above-ground: which is better?

Both protect you when they are built right. In-ground shelters stay out of sight and have the earth around them, but they mean steps and need good drainage. Above-ground shelters are easier for anyone with mobility issues and work where rock or water rules out digging, so we help you pick what fits your site and family.

Can you build a shelter under my garage?

Yes. On a new home we build the shelter before the garage slab is poured and leave a hatch for access. In an existing garage we can often cut out a section of the floor, dig, build the shelter below and re-pour the slab around the hatch, depending on rock and utilities.
