Concrete Basement Floors

Concrete Basement Floors from a crew that shows up

A basement floor should be flat, dry and ready for whatever you plan to do down there, whether that is storage, a workshop or a finished family room. Plenty of basements around Middle Tennessee fall short: older homes with dirt or broken floors, slabs that cracked and heaved as the clay underneath moved, and floors that sweat or seep after heavy spring rain. If you are finishing a basement, the floor is the first thing to get right, because the flooring, the walls and everything you put down there sit on it.

We pour new basement floors and replace failing ones with our own crew. When there is old concrete, we break it out and haul it off, then grade and compact a gravel base, lay a vapor barrier, set steel, and pour and trowel a smooth, flat slab. We form a sump pit where you want one, and we can finish the floor with a sealer or an epoxy or polyaspartic coating. Our job photos show the crew bull-floating and finishing big slabs, and with twenty-plus years in concrete, licensed and insured, we know how to get concrete into a tight basement.

Questions

Concrete Basement Floors FAQs

Why do basement floors crack and get damp around here?

Middle Tennessee clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and that movement can crack and heave a slab poured without a good base. Heavy spring rain raises the water pressure under the floor, which shows up as damp spots or seepage at cracks. A compacted gravel base, a vapor barrier and a place for water to go handle most of it.

How much does a new basement floor cost?

It depends on the size of the floor, whether old concrete has to be broken out and hauled off, how hard it is to get concrete into the basement and the finish you want. A dirt-floor basement with good access is a simpler job than a tear-out through one narrow door. We give a free quote after seeing it.

How soon can I use the basement after the pour?

You can usually walk on it within a day or so, but heavy loads, flooring and coatings have to wait until the slab has cured. A cool basement cures slower than an outdoor slab in summer. We tell you when the floor is ready for the next step.

Can you pour a floor in my old dirt-floor basement or cellar?

Yes. We clean out and grade the floor, deal with low spots and water, lay gravel and a vapor barrier, and pour a new slab. Headroom matters, so we check ceiling height first and set the floor level with you.

Is this the same as a foundation or a walk-out?

No. This page covers the floor slab inside the basement. The foundation is the footings and walls around it, and a walk-out is a door opening with outside access. We do all three, and on a new home the foundation and basement floor can be one job.
