Concrete Steps, Stairs & Porches

Concrete Steps, Stairs & Porches from a crew that shows up

Steps get noticed when something goes wrong with them. A front stoop pulls away from the house, treads crack and flake after a few winters of salt, one rise is taller than the rest and people catch a toe on it, or the back door opens onto a drop with a wobbly wood step below it. On the rolling lots common around Spring Hill, Franklin and Columbia, plenty of yards also need steps just to get from the patio down to the grass safely.

We form and pour steps on site to fit your exact door height and slope, instead of setting a precast unit that almost fits. Our work includes poured front steps and the steps up to a concrete deck around an above-ground pool. Each set sits on footings dug to firm soil, gets steel tied into the stoop and landing, and has even risers and deep treads so it feels right underfoot. We set handrail sleeves during the pour and finish the treads with a broom texture for grip.

Questions

Concrete Steps, Stairs & Porches FAQs

Why do concrete steps crack and flake?

Freeze-thaw and de-icing salt are the main causes. Water soaks into the surface, freezes and expands, popping off thin flakes, and salt speeds that up. Steps poured on loose fill next to the house also settle and pull away. We pour on footings dug to firm soil, use an air-entrained mix, pitch the treads slightly to shed water, and suggest sand or a gentler ice melt instead of rock salt.

How much do new concrete steps cost?

It depends on how many steps, the width, whether there is a landing or porch, tear-out of the old steps and the finish. A short set of front steps costs less than a wide porch with a stamped landing. We measure on site and give you a written quote for free.

Do new steps need a permit, and how long do they take?

It depends on the town and the job. New porches and steps tied to a deck or addition usually need a permit, and many subdivisions want HOA approval for changes at the front of the house, so we check both before we start. Forming and pouring a set of steps usually takes a few days, and the forms come off once the concrete has set.

Poured steps or precast steps?

Poured steps, in most cases. They are formed to your exact rise, width and landing, sit on footings, and can match a walkway or patio. Precast units come in set sizes, so they often leave an odd step at the top or bottom, and a single heavy block can settle and tip.

Can you build steps that are easier to climb?

Yes, and it helps a lot when older relatives visit or live with you. We can build lower risers with deeper treads, add a wide landing at the door, and set handrail sleeves on one or both sides. At some front entries, a gently sloped walk up to a landing can replace a few of the steps entirely.
