Concrete Pool Decks

Concrete Pool Decks from a crew that shows up

A pool is only as nice as the deck around it. Homeowners want a surface that stays comfortable on bare feet in July, does not turn slick when it is wet, and does not crack and tilt toward the water after a few seasons. An above-ground pool needs a solid deck and real steps so getting in is not a climb up a ladder off the grass. And after a wet Middle Tennessee spring, the deck has to carry splash-out and rain away from the pool and the house instead of letting it sit.

We pour concrete pool decks around inground pools and above-ground pools, and our job photos include a concrete deck and steps built around an above-ground pool. We compact the base carefully next to the pool wall, form the deck to slope away from the water, place steel and expansion joints, and finish with a broom, textured or stamped surface that gives bare feet grip. Lighter colors stay cooler in the summer sun, and we seal the finished deck against weather and pool chemicals.

Questions

Concrete Pool Decks FAQs

Why do pool decks crack and tilt toward the pool?

Usually because the soil backfilled around the pool wall was loose and settled after the deck was poured. Middle Tennessee clay makes it worse by swelling in wet weather and shrinking in dry spells, and heavy spring rain running under the slab washes out support. We compact the backfill zone in layers, slope the deck away from the water and set expansion joints so the deck and the pool can move separately.

How much does a concrete pool deck cost?

It depends on the size of the deck, the finish, how much tear-out or grading is involved and access to the backyard. A broom-finish deck beside an above-ground pool costs less than a large stamped deck around an inground pool. We give you a written quote on site for free.

When should we schedule the pool deck?

For a new inground pool, after the shell and plumbing are in and the backfill is done, and we coordinate that timing with your pool builder. For an above-ground pool, the deck can go in before or after the pool is set, depending on the design. If you want to swim by summer, get your quote in early spring, and in hot weather we start pours early in the day to beat the heat.

Which finish is best around a pool?

A textured finish, either a fine broom texture or a stamped stone pattern with grit added to the sealer. Both give wet feet grip without scraping skin. Smooth troweled concrete looks clean but gets slick, so we keep it away from the water.

Does the deck around an above-ground pool need footings?

The deck needs a firm, compacted base, and the steps and any raised sections get footings dug to firm soil. The pool sits on its own prepared base, separate from the deck, so the two do not push against each other. We plan the layout with you so the ladder, steps and filter equipment all have a solid spot.
